Pulkovo International airport is located about 15 km south of the city. It has two terminals, domestic Pulkovo-1, and international Pulkovo-2.

The first house built in the new Saint Petersburg was the cabin of Peter the Great. He wanted a stone house but he did not have enough money. Instead he painted the walls as if the house would be made of bricks. Location on Google map here.

The cape of Vasilievsky Island, the largest island in the Neva, is called Strelka or Spit. It is situated across the Neva from the Winter Palace. A few steps from the Palace Square through the Triumphal Arch is Nevsky Prospect, the main avenue of Saint Petersburg. A few steps further on Nevsky and on the left hand side there is seen the arts square. On the arts square stands a statue of Alexander Pushkin. Saint Petersburg is the city of White Nights. Unfortunately they only last a short time, usually from June to beginning of July. Already starting from May the nights are bright. But the brightest period starts in June. Beliye Nochi is caused by northerly geographical location of the city.

It is truly romantic to walk along the banks of the city's rivers and canals in almost broad daylight any time of the day. International arts festival, the white nights, is organized during this season.

There are several excellent museums in St. Petersburg. When you go there, you should visit at least one of them.

The State Hermitage Museum is huge. It is almost mandatory to visit there at least during your first visit to St. Petersburg. There are more than three million artifacts from different eras starting from the prehistoric art of ending at the current times. Location on Google map here.

The Russian Museum has the world's largest collection of Russian art. The collections includes icon art, the world's best seascape painter Ivan Aivazovsky's works, landscapes by Isaac Levitan and works of Ilya Repin, Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich. The State Hermitage museum has an exceptional collection of Italian renaissance and French impressionist paintings, as well as an excellent collections of works by Rembrandt, Picasso, and Matisse. There is also an outstanding collection of Siberian and Central Asian art.

Metro is a popular and cheap form of transport in Saint Petersburg. It is open from about 05.30 to 01.00. Info about metro and other means of transportation.

There are also trams, buses, minibuses and trolleys. You should find out their routes in advance. You can buy tickets from the driver or conductor. Trams, regular buses and trolleys have conductors. There are also T(axi) Buses and E(xpress) buses. They take only cash and are more expensive than regular buses.

Taxis are freely available. All taxis should have meters. Charges are made according to the distance. Some companies take orders also online. Some offer fixed prices. Here online ordering only in Russian. A list of taxi companies.

Many private drivers will also take you to the desired destination for a fee. You can just lift your hand and when a car stops ask the driver how much it would cost to take you to your address. If there is already more than one person in the car, you might feel more secure taking the next vehicle.

Money




Official Russian currency is the Ruble (Rbl). There are banknotes from 5 to 5.000 rubles. They can be seen on the Bank of Russia website.

It is easy to exchange Euros or US dollars into rubles. You have to show your passport to make the transaction in the exchange points. It is not recommended to change money on the street. You might get Serbian or some other exotic old notes, not accepted anywhere in the world.

You can use your mobile phone in Saint Petersburg if your phone is not using only GSM 1900 standard. You can use street phones or phone from your hotel. Making domestic or international calls is much easier than it used to be.

The prepaid Russian SIM card is also a practical option. You can communicate without the high international roaming surcharges. The prepaid card gives you control over your costs and you cannot get any surprises afterwards.

You can use Internet in Internet cafes. If you travel with laptop, or would like to connect to the Internet from your hotel, you can buy an Internet card. Some hotels also provide access to the Internet.

Saint Petersburg used to be called the crime capital of Russia. Now the situation has improved. Petty criminals like pickpockets can be a problem for tourists.

You should not carry a lot of cash or show big sums in public. Public transport, the metro and all tourist traps are the most likely places of these problems. Violent crime is unlikely for a tourist. It is not wise however to wander alone at night in a drunken condition in unfamiliar company. Do not carry your passport if it is not necessary. You can take at home a photocopy of your passport and visa and carry it along.

You should take travel insurance and check that diphtheria, polio and tetanus vaccinations are in order. There are Giardia parasites in the tap water, so bottled waters are recommended.

Foreigners can get free emergency care in Russian hospitals. Comfort in the hospitals can be pretty low. There are also private clinics in Saint Petersburg. Their prices can be high. There are American and European medical centers.
